Are Social Media Influencers Really Influencing?

In the era of social media and hashtags, starting a movement against injustice, inequality or anything unfair at all has been the easiest. Taboos have been thrown off the table and voices have been heard. Candle marches have been taken to the roads, and rallies have resounded day after day. And, among all this chaos, some people have made their presence felt. Some people just have slightly more influence on people than others. Yes, I am talking about Social Media Influencers.

The social media is a very persuasive place and these social media influencers happen to be in the centre of it all, seemingly influencing people in different aspects of life. According to an excerpt from a research paper study, these social media influencers represent a new type of independent third party endorser who shape audience attitudes through blogs, tweets, and the use of other social media. Read it twice. 

How have they influenced us?

Now, let’s talk about how many of these social media influencers are actually creating an impact on social media devotees? A recent survey has predicted that approximately 84% of the social media influencers are women, so this means the women are now in power to actually make an impression on the mindset and opinions of people, but how many of them are actually all that is in their power to bring about a change in the lives of the people who follow them? How many are trying to create any sort of awareness for the people who spend a pretty good deal of their time investing in engaging in their posts? 

Apart from talking vastly about their respective niches, there is a multidimensional aspect to these influencers. These SMIs (Social Media Influencers) have such a huge audience base that they have the power to actually create a difference. However, I have come to realise there is a subtle line that differentiates the audience base that an influencer has. A pretty good audience base but just for the namesake of it or for the glam creates practically no difference. The implication is their audience and viewers do not really let their influencer’s content influence them in any way. However, an influencer whose audience actually follows their content is something we all really need right now. Today, on International Women’s Day, I commend all the female (as well as the male) bloggers who have actually created an impression for me. 

Here are some of my favourite influencers!

A liberal, expressive and joyful space for driving in unity and freedom to expression. Feminists and the LGBT community are welcome here. It is absolutely one of my favourites! Such a space is the need of the hour and their belief that humanity is above all strikes a chord with me. 

Through elements of fun, this talented and beautiful human being creates content to inspire her fans. She is not afraid to address the elephant in the room and that is what we applaud you for! 

Social media has blessed us with some blessed artists, and one of them is this. An inspiration, a gifted soul. She is what she is and what she is simply amazing. Her thoughts, her words make you go back to your own space and revise, reframe yours. If that’s not influencing, I don’t know what is. 

Now I can talk about so many more like these pretty souls out there but we would need a year-long “Women’s Day” for the same. My take on this big day is, it does not need to be just one day of the whole year where we celebrate women. This should be the norm. And, as far as social media influencers are concerned, I urge them to use their presence to create an impact, to make a change, talk about what is important, and to actually influence their fans for good. I urge them to take a stand, to create a safe space for expression just like the ones I mentioned above and show the women in the world that they do not need just one Superman to save them all, and that there are so many of them.

    I personally think it is about finding a healthy balance. I would love larger influencers to use their platforms for other things than making money, however a lot already do this!

    I think larger influencers should use their platform for good as well as making money. I think they have a responsibility when they have a community especially if they are younger viewers
